Improving Ellipses | Boost Your Skills 4 | Drawing Practice For Beginners
Do these pencil drawing practice exercises to get better at drawing ellipses and to understand how ellipses change when applying perspective!
We'll start with simple exercises to loosen up by sketching ellipses using the hula-hoop method. Then, we'll practice applying perspective to ellipses in relation to a horizon line or eye level.
Finally, practice your sketching and shading skills as you complete a sketchbook project with me. We'll apply perspective to ellipses as we sketch some basic still life objects. As we work on this project you'll also deepen your understanding of how to know where to shade a drawing.

    Thanks so much for your videos (again)! It's so enjoying and helpful to follow along. My main problem here were the upper lines of the openings, they mostly were too flat. But your tip to draw the center lines and to direct the side curves to the middle point of the minor axis helped so much! If you do that a couple of times, you get a good feeling for the openings without drawing the axis

    Thanks for this very informative first lesson in drawing. I am an absolute beginner at the age of 77 and I love following your lessons. I ma Dutch but I live in Brasil. One thing I noticed while making the fantasy drawing is that in some places the lines smear when you slide over them when drawing another line with e.g. your little finger if you use it as a support. How can I prevent this?

    • @ThePencilRoomOnline
      @ThePencilRoomOnline 13 дней назад

      Very common problem especially for left handers like me 😅 Softer pencils (2B-8B) will smudge more than hard pencils. Aside from turning your page around to avoid resting your hand on the drawing, you can use a paper towel under your hand, over the areas of the drawing you've already done. It may pick up a bit of the graphite from the drawing but it shouldn't smudge it 🙂 Thanks for watching!

Assume nothing, except that 1. making the look of three-D reality on a 2-D piece of paper is a skilled illusion, with techniques; and 2. you need to learn how. But you CAN.

    do you use and easel or a flat table? Will a drawing easel help to move from the elbow and shoulder? I'm drawing in a smaller sketch book and on a flat surface. I'm finding it difficult to move from my shoulder and elbow with control. Help?

    • @ThePencilRoomOnline
      @ThePencilRoomOnline 21 день назад

      For filming I use a flat table. I do have an adjustable drawing easel that I will use if Im drawing on bigger pieces of paper and having something more upright will definitely cause you to work from the shoulder more because it's harder to rest your hand on the page. For a small sketchbook though I will still work on a flat surface. If you are working on a page 8x11" or smaller then it's totally fine to work from the wrist as most of what you draw will fit within that movement. When you need a wider movement for long straight lines or to do quick sketching or gesture drawing, try focusing on allowing the hand to slide on the page with swift movements as you draw, as if you were gently brushing something off your paper with the side of your hand. This is the same as working from the elbow/shoulder but it might be a little bit easier to think about!

      @@HansBauer-cb2cg Check out this video about different grips: ruclips.net/video/_70yJ36fNXc/видео.htmlsi=nGoOlyUfDYpdU5BX At this stage though, don't worry about the different grips so much as practicing moving your pencil in different directions/movements and allowing the hand to move on the page too (using your regular grip). I talk about it a bit in this video ruclips.net/video/jp2C_tx5MuI/видео.htmlsi=wqrKtlNKgTzUT0cB which is a good one for figuring out where you might have some restrictions. It's not so much about doing things 'right' as it is about increasing your coordination and range of movement which only comes through practice. Mix up your practice with exercises and also just having a go at drawing something you are interested in :)

    Hello, Is it wrong to have a grip similar to the tripod grip, but instead of the thumb being at the base, it holds the side of the pencil and grips the index finger? This is how I have always held a pencil, and I don't know if it's bad.

    • @ThePencilRoomOnline
      @ThePencilRoomOnline 21 день назад

      Nope its not bad. Think of the tripod grip as whatever way you normally hold a pen to write with - that will be the easiest grip for you to use to draw with but it's good to practice overhand grip and loose grip to give you different types of movement ☺

    I have now watched several of your videos on your lessons for those with interest in or, just beginning to draw. I must say, you are a superb instructor!!! Everything thing you say and show are in fact very important to learn and do. Why?! Because everything you teach will be used in some form or fashion regardless of what a person decides to draw! With out practice in the skills you teach a person will never achieve the level of results in their drawings that they may desire it to be. Practice, practice, practice. With out it you'll never become proficient in drawing. In fact, almost anything you do in life requires practice to become very good at what you do and don't forget to continually learn new things to improve your skills!

    What is being done her, with the leaf, isn't nearly as easy as it appears to be! A few folks can do it. I saw my mother draw by looking at a photo of some birds. When she was done it looked exactly like the birds in the picture. I was amazed! That started my interest in drawing. Yet, even today I have difficulty in drawing an object by looking at a photo and getting it as good as she did. She could draw it the same size but, couldn't get it to look right drawing it larger. She said she draws what she sees in the proportion she sees it and could do it any larger. To bad she wasn't aware of the methods that are used to draw it larger.

    • @ThePencilRoomOnline
      @ThePencilRoomOnline 26 дней назад

      That's interesting about your mother being able to draw at the same size! Getting proportions correct with contour drawing like in this video gets easier the more you do it. Speaking of drawing size, I definitely find that students and myself included have a comfortable drawing size that is unique - some people naturally draw small and some people naturally draw large (some people like your mother just have a good eye!). But yes it's good we have methods to check proportions at any size! Thanks for your comment and for watching :)

    Emily, I am in my mid sixties and have just embarked on a desire to draw & paint. I happened upon your videos by accident when looking for drawing tuition. I had no idea that there was any other way to hold a pencil apart from the one that I was taught. I couldn't sleep last night and decided to watch some videos on drawing. I started out with the Standard grip with some success, but then changed to the Loose grip, the results were much better and I found that I could be more fluid in my drawing. Thanks for teaching this Middle-aged dog some new tricks.
